XVII SEKMUN

SEKMUN is a mock United Nations model that helps participants to understand that the best way of resolving problems is through dialogue and negotiation and never violence. Amid increasing globalisation, SEK Education Group, believes in

the value of this educational-cultural event in which students, in addition to training in current affairs and international politics, acquire a broad vision of the world.

Welcome from the Secretary General of the XVII SEKMUN Meeting

Esteemed delegate:

I am extremely pleased to welcome you to the seventeenth SEKMUN, Dialogue for Coexistence, which will take place on 7, 8 and 9 March 2023 online, and on 8, 9 and 10 March 2023 face-to-face in Madrid.

In its latest editions, SEKMUN has adopted a different dynamic, unquestionably marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this situation has not prevented us holding the model, and thanks to the work of the SEKMUN team, new challenges have been faced, highlighting its relevance and resilience despite adversity. Thanks to this, we have been able to show that SEKMUN does not depend on the place it is held or the way in which it is conducted, but on its community.

I would like to encourage all participants to bring the spirit of the United Nations to the event, and through it, rekindle the essence of SEKMUN. An essence that is not based on large or small delegations, does not distinguish between experienced students and those who have never taken part before, but sees each and every one of the delegates as fundamental pieces of the model. Likewise, a quintessential part of SEKMUN is the trust that it places in its delegates to produce exceptional resolutions. Resolutions that have the innovative perspective of youth, which echoes the importance of the new generations in the United Nations.

As General Secretary, I invite you to actively take part in the model, and to combine the seriousness and responsibility that your position entails with the learning and fun that comes from forging friendships in a new environment. Likewise, I encourage you to take advantage of every moment, and to be enriched by the hard work carried out by your colleagues, and by the vast experience of the authorities that will guide you along this path. Finally, I would like to ask you to listen to all the voices that take part in SEKMUN, and to contribute your own, thus reinforcing the work of all the heroes, who through dialogue, showed that a better world was possible.

A cordial greeting and I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

Antonio Herrera Santana

Awards

a.- SEKMUN ‘Ángel Escudero’ Scholarship

1.-Introduction

SEK Education Group, through the Felipe Segovia Foundation, with the purpose of continuing to train citizens capable of facing the new challenges of our time, offers an annual scholarship that will be awarded to the student who stands out for his or her participation in each of the SEKMUN conferences. The scholarship is named “Angel Escudero” after the former UN official, in recognition of his dedication, during the first 10 years he directed the SEKMUN model: Dialogue for communication.

2.-Objective

The purpose of this scholarship is to engage students and increase the quality of SEKMUN’s educational activity.

SEKMUN is a simulation and we are therefore committed to following as closely as possible the procedures and regulations that govern the various bodies and committees of the UN system. In order to continue improving SEKMUN, the most outstanding students of each phase of SEKMUN conferences will be awarded.

Winning students will be awarded a scholarship in order to enrol and participate in the MUN of their choice.

Once they return from their chosen MUN, students must submit an essay specifying the aspects or initiatives that in their opinion could contribute to improving the quality of SEKMUN.

The essay may focus on:

Initiatives that can enrich the different phases of the debate, negotiation or the writing of documents,

· Aspects related to logistics or the complementary social activities.

· Research and recommendations on certain techniques in the period of preparation and training.

· Managing and improving the website.

· Designing a campaign and measures to promote SEKMUN in Spain and abroad.

3.- Applicants

The scholarship is aimed at students who have participated as delegates, representatives or chairs in the SEKMUN conference of the current school year.

The scholarship will cover the expenses for students to take part in one of the MUNs organised by the winning student’s home school including travel expenses, accommodation, meals and enrolment fees. Said amount will be managed by the administration of the school to which said student belongs.

4.- Selection Procedure

The scholarship is granted to students on the following basis:

· Student-delegates will choose the best delegate in each committee in secret ballot. From the group of students chosen in the different committees, teachers will elect the best delegate / representative in a vote- Teachers cannot vote for a student from their own school.

· The teachers-coordinators will choose the best chair. They may not propose (vote) a student from their own school.

· From the two students selected in the votes of the two groups mentioned, the secretary general and the organising team will choose the student to whom the scholarship is granted.

5.- Commitment of the selected student

Upon return and within a month, students must submit to the organising team an essay on the MUN which they have attended highlighting those initiatives and activities that in their opinion could improve SEKMUN.

The student’s work will be published on the SEKMUN website.

6.- Endowment

The scholarship will enable students to participate with all expenses paid in one of the MUNs organised by the winning student’s home school including travel expenses, accommodation, meals and enrolment fees. Said amount will be managed by the administration of the school to which said student belongs.

b.-Awards

1.-Categories

SEKMUN awards aim to honour students for their efforts in preparation and research and for their sense of responsibility, work ethic, negotiation skills and in general go to those particularly outstanding delegates.

There is a sole category per committee for best delegate.

2.-Procedure

In order to choose Best Delegate, each committee meets and casts a formal vote on concluding the eighth session, on the last day of the event. Each delegate has one vote, the ballot paper is included in the SEKMUN folder. The chairing team must supervise that each delegate casts their vote in the ballot box that the organising committee will have presented previously to the chair of each committee.

The chairing team cast a ‘deciding vote’, so at the end of the eighth session, on the last day, they will meet by Committees or Commissions – at the AG – to issue in writing the name of the winning delegates. This vote will be taken into account in case of a tie.

The SEKMUN Organising Committee will collect, before the ninth session, the ballot boxes to count the votes in which the teachers from the schools invited may be present, if they wish. The results of the vote

may not be modified by the organising committee or by the teachers from invited schools, except in the event of delegates behaving in breach of the spirit of the Model.

Once the count has been concluded, the event’s organising committee will draw up a list of the winning students and will draw up the corresponding diplomas. The results will not be made public until the closing ceremony in which the committee chairs will announce them and present the outstanding delegates with their diplomas.

The list of awarded delegates will be published on the SEKMUN website, once the Model is finished.
